the southwest research and design institute applied for 18 patents from january to august this year, including 16 patents for inventions. it has a total of 16 authorized patents, including 15 patents for invention, up 30 percent year-on-year. the institute has seen steady growth in the number of patents in recent years. to date, it has applied for a total of 283 patents, including 245 patents for inventions. a total of 156 patents were approved, including 122 patents for inventions.
scientific research institutes are a new force in china’s fundamental research and high-tech r&d and innovation. however, weak intellectual property and risk management awareness, undesirable management and insufficient protection have created a situation where scientific research institutes have produced many achievements but few patents. they also face difficulties in commercializing patents. however, the southwest institute has continued to improve patent application and management mechanisms and strengthen talent team building. it strives to build a sound patent application process and upgrade intellectual property creation, protection and management to strengthen patent work and improve self-innovation abilities.
the institute has passed an acceptance check as one of the second batch of national intellectual property models and was named a national pilot unit for patent operations. it began enterprise intellectual property management standardization work last august arranged by the sichuan intellectual property office. it has also released an intellectual property management document. the institute’s intellectual property management and operation work has been fully confirmed.
the ultimate goal of patent management is to industrialize and marketize patents. with the increasing intellectual property protection awareness, the institute has pushed for intellectual property management popularization to enhance operation capacity and advance intellectual property work standardization. it encourages scientific research personnel to apply patents in developing new chemical technology, product and process design, as well as building or renovating units. at the same time, the institute has kept up work in converting patent achievements, such as natural gas production through coke oven gas, ethyl alcohol through acetic acid hydrogenation, and ethylene glycol through industrial effluent gas. to date, southwest institute has enjoyed a patent achievement conversion rate of over 75 percent, successfully incubating its wisdom and playing an important role in increasing its international competitiveness.
